The goal of the Work Package 2, 'Requirements for European next-generation optical access networks', is to get consolidated requirements for next-generation optical access (NG-OA) networks. This covers technical, economic, operational, and political needs according to national and European broadband strategies.
The starting point for an initial set of requirements is the Full Service Access Networks (FSAN) group. Based on the FSAN discussions held so far about GPON and the planned extension to 10G-GPON (XGPON), the available requirements will be gathered and extended to NG-OA. Besides further development of the technical requirements related to new technologies and infrastructural changes (e.g., network consolidation), particular focus will be put on techno-economic and co-operation requirements. By creating a broad consensus in the operator community through initiating discussions among different operators and system vendors, the project aims to identify and analyze the most important requirements for a European NG-OA solution. These consolidated requirements will then be submitted to FSAN to enable a standardization effort at the ITU-T, which is then backed by all supporting members of FSAN. Furthermore, a broad discussion with operators and vendors will be started to improve as much as possible the alignment of requirements to enable an industry-wide standard for optical access.
The main WP2 objectives can be summarized as follows:
• Provide consolidated requirements for European NG-OA solutions regarding technical, economic, operational, and political regulatory aspects to establish a basis for broad acceptance in the operator and vendor community thus achieving necessary market volumes
• Establish a broad basis (of operators, vendors) to drive standardization activities and to drive a European based standard for NG-OA networks by initiating a network operator board
